Awarded an ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) East Midlands Award for design and construction, Whitwell Sewage Treatment Works is a new plant designed to serve a population of 5,500 for Severn Trent Water. Eastwood & Partners delivered the civil engineering and hydraulic design for the project as part of the design/construct team.
The new plant was designed to treat sewage and replace an old redundant works, which was demolished as part of the scheme.
The structures include an inlet works, storm tanks 42 x 15 x 5 metres deep oxidation tank, final settlement tank, sludge treatment plant and other associated works. Sustainability was a key factor incorporated into the design and the project was commended for excellence in Health and Safety. Construction difficulties included the excavation of hard limestone rock, which underlies the whole of the site.
