Wards Brewery Redevelopment, Sheffield

Wards Brewery Redevelopment, Sheffield

We were appointed by JF Finnegan for engineering services for the redevelopment of Ward’s Brewery.  The project was to construct nearly 260 apartments, in new seven and eight-storey buildings and in refurbished buildings previously occupied by the brewery.  Also to create 4000m2 of space for offices and retail/entertainment. The new structures are reinforced concrete frames, using traditional ribbed slabs and post-tensioned floors. The existing masonry tower was refurbished by removing the floors  systematically, using a concrete ring beam to stabilise the building and introducing new timber floors.

The Porter Brook flows across part of the site in a culvert.  The residential building was designed to straddle the culvert without applying load to it.  There was also basement car parking.  A contiguous piled wall was utilised to allow the basement to be excavated.
