Gudge Heath Lane, Fareham
This site, for approximately 150 houses and apartments, has two parts. The southern half comprises a former laundry, built in the 1930s, whilst the northern half was an MOD oil depot. Both had a number of potentially contaminative features. Extensive geo-environmental investigations have been carried out over the last year on both sites. The laundry site has been found to be contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons, principally affecting groundwater. Innovative techniques, including a membrane interface probe, were used to delineate the plume. Extensive computer modelling was carried out using the Surfer, RBCA Tier 2 Analyzer and RISC4 programmes to determine potential risks to both human health and controlled waters.
Remediation by injection of hydrogen release compound is being undertaken. Surprisingly, the oil depot site was found not to be too significantly contaminated, apart from localised spillages around the former fuel handling station. Eastwood & Partners currently have a watching brief during the tank removal. An Implementation Plan for remediation will be completed once further investigation below and surrounding the removed tanks and ancillary features has been completed. The photo shows one of the partly demolished tanks on the former oil depot site and apartments, in the process of construction, in the background on the former laundry part of the site
