Castle Centre, The Sheffield College
The project involves the construction of a ten storey steel frame tower block with a seven storey glazed atrium, a four storey concrete frame catering block and a four storey steel frame sports hall block on the site of the existing Sheffield College Castle South Campus, at Granville Road, Sheffield.
The project cost is over £40m and the projected construction period is approximately 2½ years starting September 2007.
The basement floor of the building is generally used for car parking with columns on a 7.2m grid. The steel frame of the tower block has columns on a 6m grid to suit the teaching room layout. One metre deep reinforced concrete transfer beams have been incorporated at the ground floor level to transfer the column loads.
